2nd XI Page Season Ends in Defeat for Weakened Seconds The 2nd XI travelled to Swansea with some 3rd XI regulars in the line up, due to 1st XI call ups and unavailability. Ben Callow (3 for 27) Gareth Sullivan (2 for 22) and Peter Rose (2 for 24) were Centurions' best bowlers, while Chahal (30) and Morris (24) top scored for the home side. And after restricting Swansea to 144 for 8 after the 50 overs, Centurions would have felt that the hard work had been done. However, with only Christian Bruce (33) Laurence O'Sullivan (23) and Matthew Thomas (29) making anything like a decent individual score, the innings closed on 104 all out. A defeat to end the season, but some plus points for the skipper to ponder for next year - Chris Thorne has been a great find and will undoubtedly progress to become a 1st XI regular. Laurence O'Sullivan, similalry has been a great addition to the team. Lloyd Bruce continues to improve and has picked up a lot of wickets as well as frustrating the opposition with his controlled bowling and it has been great to have Peter Rose and Shaz Rehan back in the ranks. Swansea 144/8 Suly 104 all out Chris Thorne was once again in imperious form with the bat as Centurions made quick work of defeating Pontarddulais at Burnham Avenue. After winning the toss the visitors opted to bat, but got off to the worst possible start when both openers were back in the pavilion with only 7 runs on the board, courtesy of David Eskins and Huw Williams, who bowled a tight line to keep the runs in check. Huw took his second wicket when he had Jones LBW for 10, with the score on 31. Rogers showed some resistance before Tom Evison got in on the act by having him caught by skipper Matthew Thomas for a well made 57. Unfortunately for Pontarddulais, the rest of the batting continued to prove fragile as Dave Eskins and Tom Evison took 3 wickets each to leave them reeling. Matthew Thomas picked up the wicket of Miles and Lloyd Bruce had Richards caught by Laurence O'Sullivan for 18, for a total of 129 all out with 11 overs unused. After the break Centurions survived a bit of a wobble when Shaz Rehan (9) and Owain Lovering (7) were both out with only 39 runs on the board. But Chris Thorne had another great day, hitting no fewer than 18 boundaries in an innings of 89 not out, to steer Centurions home in the 24th over. This brings Chris up to 629 league runs for the season, with half of that total coming in the last three innings. Centurions' future is in good hands with players like Chris ready to step up to the 1st XI. Sully 132 for 4 Pontarddulais 129 all out For Scorecard Click Here Tom and Chris See Centurions Home
Chris is The Main Man Again!
The 2nd XI travelled to Newport and once again found Chris Thorne in unbeatable form with the bat. Chris hit his second century in 2 matches, this time 123 not out, as Centurions won by 6 wickets. Tom Evison bagged theree wickets to clinch the victory.
On an overcast day Matthew Thomas had no hesitation in inserting the opposition and this looked like a good decision as opener Millichip was caught by Shaz Rehan off the bowling of Huw Williams for a duck in the 3rd over, with the score on 2. But a fine 61 run partnership between Leach and Aldrede steadied the ship for Newport. Peter Rose then removed Leach for 31 and Aston for 7 to leave the hosts on 79 for 3. Then Tom Evison entered the fray and bagged three wickets for 52 to end as Centurions' best bowler. Another fine display by Lloyd Bruce saw him bowl 12 overs for 38. A wicket for Laurence O'Sullivan completed the picture as Newport ended on a decent score of 197 for 7 after the 50 overs. David Eskins, playing his first 2nd XI match for many years, didn't pick up any wickets, but produced a miserly spell of 7 overs for just 18 runs to keep the score down.
After tea Chris Thorne and Shaz Rehan put on 104 for the first wicket, and after Shaz had been caught for 27, Shae Ellis joined Chris to put on 50 for the second wicket until Shae was also caught for 15. Centurions kept the momentum going and it was only a matter of time before Chris reached his century. Sully eventually achieved the victory in the 45th over and fittingly the winning runs came off the bat of Chris Thorne, his 15th boundary of the innings.
